Description

Discover the location of the hidden girl

X'Tacumbilxuna'An means “place of the hidden girl”. It was a sacred place for the Mayan and, according to the local legend, the name refers to a young woman named Lol-Be (flower of the road), daughter of Timot, who decided to hide her daughter in the caves to separate her from her lover, Dzulin, who eventually found her. However, due to a promise made by Lol-be to her mother Lol-Ha (water flower) –who eventually dies– she returned to the caves and took on the form of a woman turned into stone, holding a child, which can be clearly seen by visitors.

These caves extend for 200 meters. Impressive formations of stalactites and stalagmites can be found inside, which have been formed by the constant circulation of water flow, consisting of nearly 30 whimsical figures.

There is abundant vegetation around the caves. Its entrance is between 15 and 20 meters high, where visitors descend a set of stairs which covers 350 meters of lit space. From the last formation named “The Witch’s Balcony” a great chamber with a hole –where light penetrates the enclosure– can be seen.
